Later ones, these are a little light on bass, but great with a sub.

Should be a good pair too, redone by GPA.
That seller has a mix of Altec stuff, been trying to sell it for ages at silly prices, no realised lower prices move!

    redone by GPA.
Careful, nowhere in the ad does it state that. Says GPA parts were used, which means uncle Mel probably reconed them. I've not seen white grease pencil writing on any GPA work, definitely visible on one cone

FWIW, my GPA 604H III type cones are much more black, don't have the blue tint like those. However, i think GPA still use 3 or 4 different 604 cone types, and maybe one has that strong blue tint. Of course it could just be a camera anomaly casting the blue hue too.

Bowtie427ss, how do you like the HIII's? compared to older 604's you have either tested or heard? I tried the GPA crossover's, and for what I was looking for in this system, it didnt work..

Bowtie427ss, how do you like the HIII's?
These are 604-8G's with H III cones in them, the product of "uncle mel" using genuine GPA parts and doing his own work. I've had to do a lot of careful cutting and soaking with MEK to correct the improper dust guard installation on both. Right now they run without the dust guards in place as there is still much work left in removing the old bits of felt and glue from the cones before i can install newt felt. Some suggested just gluing the new felt over the old remnants. But my understanding is that the H III cone is lighter than the others, and my fear is that adding much mass will defeat any advantage the lighter cone weight offers.

Sadly, i sold my only working original 8G before i cut the felt on these recones. The problem with the recones is that the felt was installed with no slack to allow for cone excursion. Any significant LF signal quickly caused the voice coil to go out of alignment and crash in the gap making any kind of listening comparison impossible. It took me a while to get brave enough to cut into these myself. After many months of silence i decided i had little to lose.

My advice to anybody buying Altecs advertised as reconed by anyone other than GPA, get references for the reconer's work before you let go of your money. Don't learn the way i did.

That's why I will only send my stuff to Bill ! He guarantee's his work ! No questions asked, if it is something he made a mistake on, he will fix it free.Which doesn't happen very often from what I understand... Who's uncle Mel ?

I do believe they are Curt's.He had some 3184's and some 8184 cabs for sale recently.I think he might be a member here, but not sure.

When talking of early and late 604-8K's how do you tell looking at them, or can you?
I know there have been threads on it here before: EV ownership, maybe magnet substitutions, OKC versus California versus wherever, for example. Is there serial number evidence? Mine are in the low 1100's.

Date code more likely. The mag change came after 1985 when Gulton bought them.
